The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has announced a significant liquefied natural gas (LNG) deal valued at over $2.5 billion with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd, a state-owned enterprise in India. This agreement, formalized on Monday, marks a crucial step in enhancing energy collaboration between the two nations.

Contract Details and Future Implications

The contract, signed by ADNOC Gas, a subsidiary of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, entails the supply of 500,000 tonnes of LNG per year over a period of 10 years. This arrangement will secure India’s position as the largest customer of natural gas for the UAE, according to ADNOC Gas.

By 2029, Indian companies are projected to represent just over 20% of ADNOC Gas’s total annual output of 15.6 million tonnes, further solidifying the energy partnership.

ADNOC Gas highlighted that this new deal increases the total value of contracts it supports and operates to over $20 billion. This reflects a growing trend of collaboration in the energy sector between the UAE and India.

Strengthening Ties During Diplomatic Meetings

The deal was finalized during a visit by Emirati President HH Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to New Delhi, where he engaged in discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During their meeting, both leaders expressed their commitment to expanding trade between their countries.

In a joint statement, they noted the progress made since a significant agreement in 2022. The two nations aim to double their trade volume to $200 billion by 2032, underscoring the importance of this LNG deal in achieving that goal.

This agreement not only highlights the growing economic ties between the UAE and India but also positions both countries strategically in the global energy market, with the potential to influence future energy dynamics in the region.
