Behaviorally, they may avoid such situations altogether or endure them with considerable discomfort,” he explained.

Dr. Namita Ruparel, Assistant Professor at the Jindal Institute of Behavioural Sciences, added that anxiety attacks are typically connected to specific fears about upcoming events or outcomes. “A chain of unpleasant thoughts accompanied by worry, tension, and intrusive thoughts about the future is termed anxiety,” she stated. This can lead to physiological changes within the body, affecting heart rate, blood pressure, and even insulin levels.

Anxiety often emerges from uncertainty and the instinct to mitigate perceived threats. Dr. Ruparel noted that anxiety can lead to symptoms such as restlessness, fatigue, muscle tension, and irritability. In contrast, panic attacks can trigger intense physical reactions like shaking, chest pain, and a feeling of losing control.

While both panic attacks and anxiety attacks may appear similar, experts highlight key differences. Dr. Ruparel pointed out that panic attacks are sudden and often occur without warning, disrupting one’s ability to process their surroundings. “The onset of a panic attack is abrupt, and there is typically no way to stop it. The cause of panic may not relate to present reality; it usually stems from perceived threats,” she explained.

Symptoms of a panic attack may include a racing heartbeat, sweating, chills, nausea, and feelings of impending doom. Recognizing these episodes is crucial for effective management. Dr. Ruparel emphasized that awareness should be followed by a formal diagnosis. Techniques such as meditation, relaxation exercises, and breathing strategies can be beneficial for coping with both panic and anxiety attacks.
