Meet the Musicians
John Rae stands out as a renowned drummer and composer. He recorded his first album at the young age of 16 with saxophonist Tommy Smith. Over the years, Rae has produced more than 30 albums, earning two BBC Jazz Album of the Year awards. Prior to relocating to New Zealand, he was a prominent figure in the British jazz scene, known for his innovative projects that fused jazz with traditional Scottish music and dance. Currently, he teaches, leads workshops, and composes for various ensembles, including the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and the Royal New Zealand Airforce Concert Orchestra.
Joining Rae is Patrick Bleakley, a stalwart of the New Zealand jazz scene since his early days with the legendary group Blerta. Known for his warm sound and deep musicality, Bleakley has collaborated with notable artists such as Jonathan Crayford and Alda Rezende, establishing himself as a versatile double bassist.
Completing the trio is Ben Wilcock, a pianist who has made significant contributions to Wellington’s jazz community since 1999. Originally from Hamilton, Wilcock has collaborated with renowned soul artists like Bella Kalolo, Aaradnha, and Louis Baker. He also leads his own trio, The Jelly Rolls, and has released an album titled Sneaky Weasel. In addition to his performance career, Wilcock teaches at the New Zealand School of Music and has contributed to various acclaimed stage productions.
