Scottish Culture Shines at St Andrew’s Day Concert in Invercargill
The St Andrew’s Day concert, set for November 29, 2023, at the Scottish Hall in Invercargill, promises to be a vibrant celebration of Scottish culture. The event will showcase Highland dancing, singing, piping, and traditional foods, offering attendees a taste of Scotland’s rich heritage. This lively gathering aims to honor Scotland’s patron saint while providing a platform for both locals and visitors to immerse themselves in Scottish customs.
Event Highlights and Activities
Sharon Blackwood, a committee member of the St Andrew’s Scottish Society and co-organiser of the concert, expressed enthusiasm for the occasion. “It’s just a fun day out for us to celebrate our patron saint, the birth of Scotland, [practise] our traditions and also share our customs and culture with the rest of the community,” she noted. The concert will feature a variety of performances, with young talent taking center stage this year.
The concert will kick off with Sam Lindsay, a member of the Invercargill Highland Pipe Band, performing at the start of the event. Students from James Hargest College, including Will Allen and Laura Kerr, will also showcase their skills with solo performances, adding to the youthful energy of the event. Renowned performer Steve Wilcox will return to delight the audience with his regular appearance.
Cultural and Community Engagement
Before the concert, participants are invited to a special church service at First Church at 10:00 a.m. This service will include a kirking of the tartan, described by Blackwood as a “blessing of the clans and the tartans.” It provides an opportunity for attendees to don traditional attire and engage with the cultural significance of the event.
Refreshments, including sandwiches and shortbread, will be served during the afternoon concert, allowing attendees to enjoy a taste of Scottish hospitality. For those feeling lucky, raffle tickets will be available for a chance to win a grocery hamper, adding an element of excitement to the day.
The concert is set to conclude with a massed fling performed by dancers, ensuring a festive atmosphere throughout the event. Admission is priced at $5, making it an accessible way for the community to come together and celebrate.
As the St Andrew’s Day concert approaches, organizers anticipate a joyful gathering that not only celebrates Scottish heritage but also strengthens community bonds among attendees. This event is an opportunity for people to connect with their roots and share in the cultural richness of Scotland.
