Experts Share Strategies to Reestablish Kids’ Sleep Routines
As families prepare for the return to school after the summer holidays, many are facing challenges in reestablishing their children’s sleep routines. The transition from late nights and relaxed schedules can disrupt sleep patterns, making it difficult for kids to adjust as classes resume.
Dr. Karyn O’Keeffe, a senior lecturer at Massey University’s Sleep/Wake Research Centre, emphasizes that restoring good sleep is essential for a smooth transition back to school. “Sleep is a really good foundation for being at our best,” she states. “It’s really important that we look after it.”
The summer break, while beneficial for relaxation and wellbeing, often leads to a more flexible approach to bedtime. Dr. O’Keeffe acknowledges the importance of enjoying this time but also stresses the need to return to a structured sleep routine as the school term approaches.
Tips for a Successful Sleep Transition
To help families navigate this shift, Dr. O’Keeffe offers several practical tips. First, she recommends gradually adjusting bedtimes in the weeks leading up to the start of school. This can help children acclimate to an earlier sleep schedule without a sudden change.
Another key suggestion is to establish a consistent bedtime routine. This could include calming activities such as reading or light stretching, which can signal to the body that it is time to wind down. Reducing screen time before bed is also crucial, as the blue light emitted by devices can interfere with the body’s natural sleep signals.
Dr. O’Keeffe highlights the importance of sleep hygiene, which includes creating a comfortable sleep environment. Ensuring that bedrooms are dark, quiet, and cool can significantly enhance sleep quality.
Additionally, she points out that physical activity during the day can promote better sleep. Encouraging children to engage in outdoor play or sports can help expend energy, making it easier for them to fall asleep at night.
The Importance of Sleep for Wellbeing
Research consistently shows that adequate sleep is linked to improved concentration, emotional regulation, and overall health. For children, who are in crucial developmental stages, establishing good sleep habits can have lasting benefits.
Dr. O’Keeffe reiterates that while flexibility in sleep schedules during the holidays is acceptable, transitioning back to a routine is vital for academic success and personal wellbeing. “Once we’re back into our normal routine, we also need to try to get our sleep back into a routine as well,” she advises.
As families embark on this journey back to school, implementing these strategies can help minimize the stress often associated with reestablishing sleep routines, allowing children to start the school year refreshed and ready to learn.
