FIA President Lauds Qatar’s Growing Influence in Global Motorsports
The President of the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), Mohammed Ben Sulayem, recently highlighted Qatar’s significant contributions to the world of motorsports, particularly in the context of the upcoming 2025 Formula 1 Qatar Airways Qatar Grand Prix. He emphasized that this event will establish a new benchmark for the Middle East’s role in the Formula 1 Championship and the broader motorsports landscape.
Scheduled for next Sunday at the Lusail International Circuit, the penultimate round of this year’s Formula 1 Championship is increasingly recognized for its capacity to develop future talent. The circuit plays a crucial role in supporting the FIA’s ongoing initiatives aimed at expanding global participation in motorsports.
Qatar: A Hub for Motorsport Development
Qatar’s environment is particularly conducive for both aspiring and professional drivers, providing a structured pathway to reach elite levels in Formula 1. The recent expansion of karting programs, alongside the establishment of the Middle East Formula 4 Championship, underscores this commitment. Additionally, investments in training programs for race officials and volunteers further reflect Qatar’s dedication to nurturing talent.
Ben Sulayem stated that the Qatar Grand Prix represents more than just a race; it symbolizes the country’s ambition to elevate its motorsport capabilities from grassroots initiatives to a prominent global presence. He described the Lusail International Circuit not only as a premier venue for Formula 1 but also as a testament to a collaborative vision that prioritizes innovation, sustainability, and the future of motorsports.
He underscored the Middle East’s emerging role as a key player in the Formula 1 calendar, noting that the Qatar Grand Prix demonstrates the FIA’s confidence in the region’s ability to foster an inclusive atmosphere and build an engaged fan base. This engagement is vital to the FIA’s strategic goals for growth and development.
Enhancing the Racing Experience
Since Qatar began hosting Formula 1 races in 2021, the Lusail International Circuit has become a cornerstone of the championship schedule. The circuit, known for its cutting-edge design featuring 16 turns and numerous overtaking opportunities, adds a layer of competitiveness to the races.
Notably, the circuit is characterized by its stunning night lighting, which enhances the visual experience for spectators. The modern facilities introduced during recent upgrades to the 5.38-kilometer track are aimed at improving the overall experience for both drivers and fans alike.
The FIA continues its mission to promote inclusivity and diversity within motorsports. This includes initiatives focused on ensuring equal opportunities for emerging talent through innovative global programs that solidify the sport’s continued success in the region. An example of this commitment is the FIA Karting Nations Cup for the Middle East and North Africa, launched by Ben Sulayem in 2020. The most recent edition, held last month in Lusail by the Qatar Motor and Motorcycle Federation (QMMF), attracted over 170 drivers from 18 countries, marking a significant achievement for regional motorsport development.
