Lusail International Circuit Earns FIA Three-Star Environmental Accreditation
Lusail International Circuit (LIC) in Doha, Qatar, has achieved the prestigious Three-Star Environmental Accreditation from the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), marking the highest recognition for environmental performance in motorsport. This accolade distinguishes LIC as the only venue globally to host Formula 1, MotoGP, and the FIA World Endurance Championship while holding this level of accreditation.
Commitment to Sustainability and Community Engagement
The recent Formula 1 Qatar Airways Qatar Grand Prix underscored LIC’s commitment to sustainability, accessibility, and community involvement. The circuit implemented numerous initiatives designed to enhance environmental stewardship and local economic growth, aligning with both Qatar’s National Vision 2030 and Formula 1’s global sustainability goals.
As part of its efforts, LIC partnered with Earthna to support the tenth edition of Qatar Sustainability Week 2025, receiving a certificate that acknowledged its contributions. Preparations for the Grand Prix included the #QatarGP Educational Tour, which introduced over 1,000 students from schools and universities in Qatar to the operations of motorsport.
Additionally, LIC initiated environmental projects such as planting mangroves at Al Thakhira to enhance coastal biodiversity and collaborating with the University of Doha for Science and Technology to create internship opportunities in key sectors. Year-round activities for motorsport and health enthusiasts included free training sessions, fostering a broader engagement with the community.
Innovative Eco-Friendly Initiatives
LIC has integrated eco-friendly designs throughout the circuit, featuring 2,500 native trees and 30,000 drought-resistant plants. The total green coverage is expected to double by 2027. A 1.23 megawatt rooftop solar array produces approximately 3 million kilowatt hours of renewable energy annually, powering pathways and parking areas with solar lights and hybrid generators.
Electric vehicles dominate the circuit’s fleet, including buggies and shuttles, supported by four electric vehicle charging stations. Notably, all shuttles connecting the Metro station to LIC operate on electric power.
Inclusivity was a hallmark of the event, featuring a sensory room in the FanZone for visitors with diverse learning needs. For the first time in Formula 1, a commentary booth adapted to accommodate families with specific needs provided comfortable seating and excellent views of the track. A customized pit walk engaged around 25 students with additional learning requirements, allowing them an immersive experience in the garages.
Community engagement reached impressive levels during the Grand Prix, with 665 volunteers from 107 nationalities contributing to the event’s success. The Sustainability Volunteers Team led initiatives promoting eco-responsibility, including waste disposal guidance and interactive recycling games.
Transportation for attendees remained eco-friendly, with complimentary electric shuttles and metro access available for ticket holders, staff, volunteers, and interns. Advanced waste management measures were implemented to minimize environmental impacts, achieving a remarkable 86.6% recycling segregation rate. Overall, a 95% reduction in surplus food waste was realized compared to the previous year, attributed to improved planning and effective management strategies.
Through these comprehensive efforts, Lusail International Circuit has not only secured its FIA Three-Star Environmental Accreditation but has also set a standard for sustainability in motorsport, demonstrating a strong commitment to both environmental responsibility and community engagement.
