Saleh Saves Al Rayyan with Late Equalizer Against Al Arabi
Mohammed Saleh scored a dramatic equalizer deep into stoppage time, rescuing Al Rayyan from defeat against Al Arabi in a thrilling Qatar Stars League match at Al Thumama Stadium on March 14, 2024. The final score was 2-2, ensuring Al Rayyan remained in third place in the standings with 20 points, while Al Arabi moved to 17 points.
Al Rayyan initially took the lead when Roger Guedes found the back of the net in the 35th minute. Guedes volleyed home a cross from Wesley Ribeiro Silva, marking a moment of redemption after he had been denied earlier by goalkeeper Jasem Al-Hail.
The match turned in Al Arabi’s favor after the break when Pablo Sarabia equalized in the 52nd minute, converting after his first attempt was blocked by Mahmoud Abunada. Al Arabi’s pressure increased, and they took the lead in the 72nd minute thanks to a header from Alexis Perez following a corner.
Despite Al Rayyan’s struggles, Saleh made a decisive impact, surging in from the right to score in the fifth minute of added time, ensuring his team left with a valuable point. The match took a contentious turn late on, with Al Arabi’s Abdullah Marafee receiving a red card for violent conduct shortly after the equalizer.
Al Duhail Secures Narrow Win Over Qatar SC
Earlier in the day at Abdullah Bin Khalifa Stadium, Al Duhail earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Qatar SC. The match featured numerous opportunities for both teams before Ismail Mohamad scored the decisive goal in the 55th minute, heading in a cross from Sultan Al Brake.
As the match progressed, Al Duhail faced a setback when Bassam Al Rawi was sent off with a second yellow card in the 85th minute. Despite being down to ten men, Al Duhail held on to secure the win, bringing their points total to 15. Qatar SC remained fifth in the standings with 17 points.
Key Matchups on the Horizon
Looking ahead, Al Shamal will host defending champions Al Sadd on March 15, 2024, in a crucial encounter. Al Shamal, currently second in the league with 21 points, aims to close the gap on leaders Al Gharafa, who are four points ahead.
Coach David Prats acknowledged the challenge posed by an Al Sadd side featuring prominent players such as Roberto Firmino and Akram Afif. “We expect a very tough match against a top-level team, but I have full confidence in my squad,” Prats stated.
Al Sadd enters the match after a dramatic 4-2 comeback victory over Shabab Al Ahli in the AFC Champions League. Coach Roberto Mancini emphasized the importance of continuing to reduce the gap at the top of the league, stating, “This will be a difficult game because Al Shamal are a strong team, but reducing the gap to the leaders is very important for us.”
In another fixture on March 15, Al Ahli, currently ninth with 12 points, will face bottom-placed Umm Salal, who have managed only six points this season.
