Qatar will begin its journey in the 22nd Asian Men’s Handball Championship by facing Oman on January 15, 2026, in Kuwait. This tournament, taking place from January 15 to 26, serves not only as a regional competition but also as a qualifying event for the 2027 International Handball Federation Men’s World Championship in Germany.

Group Dynamics and Tournament Structure

The draw has positioned Qatar in Group A alongside South Korea and Oman. Group B consists of Bahrain, Iraq, China, and Jordan, while Group C includes Kuwait, the UAE, Hong Kong, and India. Group D features Japan, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Australia. The tournament format allows the top two teams from each group to advance to the main round, which will comprise eight teams divided into two groups competing in a round-robin style.

From the main round, the leading two teams from each group will qualify for the semifinals and will also secure their places at the 2027 World Championship. This format underscores the significance of each match, as every game is crucial for advancing in the tournament.

Qatar’s Ambitions in Handball

Qatar is determined to defend its title, having won the Asian championship for the past six consecutive editions. The team is also aiming to qualify for the World Championship for the 11th time in its history. Qatar’s best performance at the World Championship occurred in 2015, when they finished as runners-up on home soil.

In the previous edition of the Asian Men’s Handball Championship, held in Bahrain last year, Qatar secured the championship title after a thrilling 30-24 victory against Japan in the final. The upcoming matches will be a test of their skills and strategy as they seek to maintain their dominance in Asian handball.
