Boutique Business Flourishes with Creative Interiors and Café
Caroline and Eddie Ficher have transformed their century-old homestead on Fitzherbert East Rd into a thriving boutique business, known as Caroline’s Creative Interiors. Over the past decade, they have expanded their venture to include an artisan café, enhancing the appeal of their picturesque property.
Each day, the couple prepares their boutique gifts and homeware before welcoming visitors to explore the gardens and shop. The hard work has paid off, as their business continues to flourish. Caroline explains, “Everything has just evolved over time.” Their journey began when they met at church after experiencing the challenges of previous marriages. With Caroline’s background as an interior designer and Eddie’s experience as an engineer, they decided to combine their skills.
Following Eddie’s layoff, the couple began working together, initially focusing on creating luxurious curtains from home. Soon, they recognized a growing demand for home décor items, prompting them to open a shop. “We were selling from what was then our dining room, but I wanted to have it back, so Eddie built the shop,” Caroline recalls. The transformation has been remarkable, and she expresses pride in their progress.
The introduction of the café, operated by Mark Harman from Artisan Kitchen, further boosted their business. Originally a temporary initiative during the pandemic, the café’s popularity has secured its place on the property. Guests rave about the offerings, particularly the vibrant vegetable stack and the delicious waffles, which have become local favorites. The pet-friendly atmosphere complements the serene grounds, making it a popular destination for families and dog owners alike.
Caroline’s passion for the property is evident as she shares its rich history, including the first trees planted by swaggers over a century ago. The homestead retains its early 20th-century charm while flourishing with a variety of plants that Caroline has nurtured. “Some of those trees the swaggers planted are still here today… special things happen here,” she reflects.
Eddie, who has been on the property for approximately 40 years, enjoys engaging with customers in the shop, having built strong relationships with regular visitors. With only the two of them managing the business, they can keep overheads low and maintain affordable prices. Their teamwork is commendable, with Caroline knowing every detail of their stock, allowing for quick responses to customer inquiries.
The couple’s bond extends beyond the business. Although they have not had children, Caroline views their venture as a way to share their gifts and make a positive impact on others. Both of Dutch descent, they took inspiration from their families who immigrated in the 1950s. Reflecting on their journey, Eddie states, “It’s just got bigger and bigger… and busier too.”
As their business continues to thrive, Caroline and Eddie Ficher remain committed to creating a welcoming environment where customers feel valued. Their story is a testament to resilience, creativity, and the power of partnership in pursuing a shared dream.
