Boutique Business Thrives with Creative Interiors and Artisan Café
A boutique business in New Zealand, known as Caroline’s Creative Interiors, has flourished over the past decade, exemplifying the power of resilience and community engagement. Caroline and Eddie Ficher, along with their bichon frise, Pierre the 4th, operate not only a shop offering unique homeware but also a thriving artisan café that has become a local favorite.
The couple, who operate their business from a century-old homestead on Fitzherbert East Rd, have successfully blended their love for interior design with an inviting shopping experience. Caroline, an accomplished interior designer, and Eddie, an engineer, decided to join forces after Eddie faced a job loss. They initially started selling home décor items from their dining room, which led to the construction of a dedicated shop to accommodate their growing customer base.
Over the years, their venture evolved further when Mark Harman from Artisan Kitchen proposed setting up a pop-up café in 2020, during the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. Originally intended as a temporary offering, the café quickly gained popularity and remains an integral part of their operation today. Harman’s menu features a range of fresh dishes, with the vegan stack and waffles standing out as customer favorites.
Growth Through Community Connection
The Fichers have established a welcoming atmosphere that resonates with visitors. Caroline’s office, located at the back of the barn café, allows her to engage with customers, creating a sense of familiarity. “We make such a great team and we work really well together,” Caroline stated, emphasizing their commitment to customer service over profit margins.
The couple’s approach to business stems from a deeper personal connection. Both Caroline and Eddie, of Dutch descent, met 34 years ago after enduring difficult personal circumstances. Their shared journey has not only strengthened their partnership but also shaped the ethos behind their business. Caroline expressed, “We don’t look at the dollars – it’s about how you make people feel. This has evolved because we try to make people happy.”
Their homestead, a historical property, has a rich past. The couple opens its doors to customers, allowing them to use a bathroom that once served swaggers who planted trees on the land over a century ago. Caroline’s passion for the property’s history is evident as she shares stories of its past while nurturing the garden that now thrives with a collection of vibrant flowers and trees.
Future Aspirations and Community Impact
As the business continues to grow, the Fichers remain committed to maintaining affordability despite rising operational costs. Their unique combination of shop and café allows them to keep overhead low, enabling them to pass savings on to their customers. According to Caroline, they have been able to keep prices down by limiting staff numbers; apart from the café, they are the sole employees.
Caroline’s dedication to her craft is further highlighted by her detailed knowledge of inventory. She can quickly provide information on stock levels and prices, showcasing her commitment to customer satisfaction. The couple’s journey from selling items in their conservatory to establishing a popular boutique and café has been a testament to their hard work and adaptability.
Reflecting on their success, Eddie said, “It’s just got bigger and bigger … and busier too.” Their story is not just about a business; it is about community, resilience, and a shared vision that has blossomed into a beloved local establishment. As they look to the future, the Fichers remain proud of what they have built together, inspired by the connections they have formed and the joy they bring to their customers.
