Christmas Hampers Brighten Holiday for 164 Families in Need
On December 25, 2023, Christmas became a little brighter for over 160 families in Christchurch, New Zealand, thanks to the efforts of the Christchurch Methodist Mission. The organisation distributed Christmas hampers filled with festive food and gifts, part of their long-standing Support a Family initiative that has operated for the last 17 years.
This year, the mission successfully coordinated donations from 127 groups, which contributed to the creation of 164 hampers. Families selected to receive the hampers are those who have been assisted by the mission’s support services throughout the year. According to Jill Hawkey, executive director of the Christchurch Methodist Mission, social workers played a crucial role in identifying families with the highest need.
Community Contributions Make a Difference
The process of gathering donations involved individuals, families, parishes, and local organisations, showcasing a strong community spirit. Hawkey highlighted the generosity of various contributors, mentioning that the Justice Department delivered a significant quantity of items, and the telecommunications company Spark organised a toy collection.
“We’ve got a great group of supporters,” Hawkey stated, emphasizing the collaborative effort to assist families during the festive season.
The hampers contained Christmas food and a present for each child, with donors receiving non-identifying details about the families they were helping, including the ages and interests of the children. This personal touch made shopping enjoyable for many supporters, as they could tailor their gifts accordingly.
Personal Stories Highlight Impact
Among those receiving hampers was Jacqui Brunton, who expressed gratitude for the support. The hamper would not only enhance Christmas Day for her family but also benefit the foster child in their care, as they planned to share it with the child’s family during their visit.
“It’s been a hard year for everyone,” Brunton remarked. “Knowing that we can also help out while being catered to by other family members makes a significant difference.”
Andrew Fitzgerald, accompanied by his daughters, Milie and Olivia, also picked up a hamper. He noted that the support would ensure a memorable Christmas without the financial strain of additional expenses.
“It helps out big time. I don’t need to spend all my money on the extra stuff like a pavlova,” Fitzgerald said. “This support allows me to provide more for my girls.” He expressed a hope to one day contribute by donating a hamper himself, continuing the cycle of generosity.
The efforts of the Christchurch Methodist Mission and its partners illustrate the profound impact community support can have, particularly during the holiday season. Through the collective contributions, families in need are reminded that they are not alone, and that the spirit of giving thrives in their community.
