Christmas Hampers Brighten the Holiday for 164 Families in Need
Over 160 families in Christchurch celebrated a brighter Christmas Day on December 25, 2023, thanks to the efforts of the Christchurch Methodist Mission. The organization distributed Christmas hampers filled with festive food and gifts to those in need as part of their annual Support a Family initiative. This program has been running for 17 years and connects generous donors with families facing hardship.
According to Jill Hawkey, executive director of the Christchurch Methodist Mission, a total of 127 groups contributed to the creation of 164 hampers this year. These donations came from various sources, including individuals, workplaces, and community organizations. The mission’s social workers identified families who would benefit the most from the hampers, ensuring that support reached those who required it most.
Hawkey emphasized the collaborative nature of the initiative, stating, “We’ve got a great group of supporters. They might be individuals, families, parishes, or organisations. The Justice Department brought in a huge amount this morning. [Telco] Spark has done a big collection for toys. It’s a real community effort to make a difference for these families.”
The hampers typically include a selection of Christmas food items along with a present tailored for children. Donors receive basic, non-identifying information about the recipient families, such as the ages and interests of the children, enabling them to choose gifts that will be meaningful. “Our supporters tell us it’s actually a lot of fun going out and buying something based on the information they get specifically for that child,” Hawkey added.
One recipient, Jacqui Brunton, expressed her gratitude for the hamper, noting its significant impact on her family’s Christmas. Brunton mentioned that the hamper would not only benefit her family but also be shared with the foster family of a child in their care. “It’s been a hard year for everyone,” she remarked. “But now I know that on Christmas Day, when we are getting catered to by other family members, we can also help out.”
Another recipient, Andrew Fitzgerald, along with his daughters, Milie and Olivia, highlighted the financial relief the hamper provided. Fitzgerald explained that receiving the hamper meant he could avoid overspending on traditional holiday treats like pavlova, allowing him to allocate more resources toward gifts for his children. “It helps out big time. It means I don’t need to go and spend all my money for the extra stuff,” he said. Fitzgerald expressed a desire to one day contribute to the initiative himself and help make someone else’s Christmas special.
The Support a Family initiative continues to highlight the spirit of community and generosity during the festive season, demonstrating how collective efforts can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those facing challenges. As the Christchurch Methodist Mission wraps up another successful year of this program, it stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and compassion in times of need.
