Isla Tops 2025 Baby Names as Kiwi Parents Embrace Tradition
Isla has claimed the title of the most popular girls’ name in New Zealand for 2025, marking its second consecutive year at the top. The name was registered a total of 179 times, reflecting a trend towards both individuality and tradition among new parents. In the rankings, Luca and Charlotte followed closely behind, while Oliver and Amelia rounded out the top five.
A total of over 58,000 births were recorded in New Zealand during 2025, with parents choosing from an impressive array of 19,457 unique names. This data provides an interesting insight into naming trends, as many parents continue to seek out distinctive names while also gravitating towards established favorites.
In a statement, Brooke van Velden, the Minister of Internal Affairs, remarked on the enduring popularity of certain names. She noted, “It is clear that while parents love individuality, established names continue to dominate, with names like Olivia and Jack remaining in the top ten since the 1990s.” This enduring appeal showcases the cultural significance of names and how they reflect societal values.
Top Baby Names of 2025
The top 20 names for boys and girls in 2025 provide a fascinating snapshot of New Zealand’s evolving naming landscape. Parents are increasingly blending traditional and contemporary influences when selecting names for their children.
While the full list of the top 20 boys’ and girls’ names will be released later in the year, the current trends suggest a blend of modern favorites and classic choices. The anticipation surrounding the release of top Māori baby names later this year, coinciding with the Matariki celebrations, further highlights the cultural diversity that informs naming practices in the country.
Overall, these trends not only reflect personal preferences but also serve as indicators of shifting cultural norms within New Zealand society. As parents continue to navigate the balance between uniqueness and tradition, the names chosen for their children become a rich tapestry of identity and heritage.
