Isla Tops Baby Names in 2025 with Luca and Charlotte Following
The latest data reveals that Isla has secured its position as the most popular girls’ name in New Zealand for 2025, with a total of 179 registrations. Following closely behind are Luca and Charlotte, while Oliver and Amelia round out the top three names for boys and girls, respectively. The total number of births registered in 2025 exceeded 58,000, showcasing the diverse naming trends among parents.
Brooke van Velden, New Zealand’s Internal Affairs Minister, commented on these findings, highlighting a blend of tradition and individuality in the choices parents make. “These trends give us fascinating snapshots of Kiwi culture and how enduring favourites shape the names we choose for the next generation,” she stated, noting that established names like Olivia and Jack have remained in the top ten since the 1990s. This blend of old and new reflects a cultural richness in naming practices across the country.
As the naming trends unfold, a total of 19,457 unique names were recorded this year, underlining the desire for individuality among New Zealand parents. The top Māori baby names for the past year are expected to be released around Matariki, further enriching the landscape of names in the nation.
