Four New Councillors Elected in Recent Local Elections

Culpit, who works in the agricultural sector, described the election results as “unbelievable” after a long campaign. “It feels like it’s been a long slog,” she remarked, noting the mix of nerves and excitement leading up to the election.

Culpit aims to bring a fresh perspective to the council, focusing on fiscal responsibility. “I agree the council needs to look at its spending and be a bit more disciplined,” she said. Culpit intends to represent her community’s interests, emphasizing the necessity for the council to tighten its belt in the face of rising living costs.

Moving to the Mataura Ward, Nicky Coats transitions from her role as chairwoman of the Mataura Community Board to councillor. Coats had previously been advised to gain governance experience on the board before taking this step. She expressed satisfaction with her previous work and is eager to continue advocating for Mataura. “It’s a really good thing for Mataura,” Coats said, referencing the value of having multiple voices representing the town.

Coats plans to prioritize projects that enhance Mataura’s historic framework, including a collaboration with the Railway Heritage Society to revitalize the Mataura Railway Station. She also highlighted the need for improved road conditions and adjustments to the community board’s charter for better financial discretion.

In the Gore Ward, Donna Bruce was elected following her active involvement in local politics, particularly as a founder of the Gore Rates Reform Group. Bruce received 1,350 votes and is determined to be a strong advocate for her community. “I’ve always tried to be a bit of a warrior for those who can’t defend themselves,” she stated, underscoring her commitment to representing the voices of the less privileged.

Despite the sometimes-controversial nature of her group, Bruce reported a welcoming atmosphere among fellow councillors during the election.
