Ngira Simmonds Challenges Leadership at Te Pāti Māori AGM
Former spokesperson for the Kiingitanga, Ngira Simmonds, openly challenged the leadership of Te Pāti Māori during the party’s annual general meeting (AGM) held on October 15, 2023, at Waiatuhi marae in Rotorua. Simmonds questioned whether the current leaders were capable of uniting the party, describing Parliament as a “house of lions” while raising doubts about who the true leader is among them.
In his remarks, Simmonds specifically criticized certain party members, suggesting that their actions did not align with the party’s goals. His comments came during a gathering that saw around 200 attendees, reflecting a more compact version of the annual meeting than in past years.
During the same event, co-leader of Te Pāti Māori, Rawiri Waititi, responded to Simmonds’ challenge by emphasizing unity against a common adversary—the government. He urged party members to focus on their collective effort rather than internal conflicts, reinforcing the idea that the party’s primary objective should be to oppose government policies that do not serve their constituents.
The AGM concluded with a traditional pōwhiri, a welcoming ceremony that highlights the cultural significance of such gatherings within Māori communities. This year’s event underscored a critical moment for Te Pāti Māori, as the party navigates potential leadership changes and strives to maintain cohesion in the face of challenges ahead.
As political dynamics evolve, the voices within Te Pāti Māori will play a crucial role in shaping the party’s future direction. The discussions and decisions made during this AGM may have lasting implications for both the party and its representation in Parliament.
