Oranga Tamariki Manager Demoted After Bullying Findings Confirmed
A manager at Oranga Tamariki has been confirmed to have engaged in bullying behavior towards her staff, leading to her demotion and a final warning from the organization. The Employment Relations Authority (ERA) upheld this decision, stating that the actions of the manager, referred to as GYN in the ruling, were indeed unjustifiable.
GYN had a long tenure with Oranga Tamariki, spanning nearly 30 years. Her roles included serving as a social worker and, more recently, as a site manager overseeing a team of supervisors and a practice leader. The issues came to light when, in March 2023, three supervisors approached the acting site manager to report their concerns while GYN was on annual leave.
The allegations included instances where she reportedly belittled her staff, such as calling a crying supervisor a “sookie baby” and advising her to put on her “big girl panties.” These comments raised serious concerns about her leadership style and its impact on workplace culture.
The ERA’s ruling concluded that Oranga Tamariki’s response to the allegations was appropriate. They stated that the organization had acted in accordance with its duty to provide a safe working environment. This decision underscores the importance of addressing workplace bullying and ensuring that employees feel secure in reporting such behavior.
The findings reflect broader issues within organizational management, particularly in sectors dealing with vulnerable populations. Oranga Tamariki, as New Zealand’s Ministry for Children, plays a significant role in child welfare. The organization’s commitment to fostering a supportive environment is critical for the well-being of both its employees and the children they serve.
While the ruling has implications for GYN‘s career, it also serves as a reminder for all organizations about the importance of maintaining a respectful workplace. The ERA’s decision highlights the necessity for leaders to embody the values they promote within their teams.
As Oranga Tamariki moves forward, it will need to address these cultural challenges to prevent similar situations from arising in the future. The case illustrates the potential consequences leaders face when their behavior undermines the trust and morale of their teams.
