Oranga Tamariki Manager Demoted After Bullying Findings
A manager at Oranga Tamariki has been demoted following findings of workplace bullying, as confirmed by the Employment Relations Authority (ERA). The manager, referred to as GYN in the ruling, was accused of belittling her staff, including an incident where she called a crying supervisor a “sookie baby” and advised her to put on her “big girl panties.”
After nearly 30 years with Oranga Tamariki, including roles as a social worker and site manager, GYN faced serious allegations regarding her treatment of team members. The situation escalated in March 2023 when three supervisors reported their concerns to the acting site manager during GYN’s annual leave.
The ERA’s decision to uphold GYN’s demotion came after a thorough investigation into the complaints. The Authority found that her behaviour created a toxic work environment, undermining the morale and mental well-being of her subordinates. The ruling emphasized the importance of maintaining a respectful workplace, particularly in an organization dedicated to the welfare of children and families.
GYN had been overseeing a team of supervisors and a practice leader within the organization. Her management style had raised concerns over the years, but the complaints made in March marked a turning point, prompting formal action from Oranga Tamariki.
The findings highlight the ongoing challenges within the organization, which has been under scrutiny for its handling of staff welfare and its overall workplace culture. The ERA’s ruling serves as a reminder of the necessity for leaders to foster an environment where employees feel valued and supported.
Oranga Tamariki has stated that it is committed to addressing workplace issues and ensuring that all staff can work in a safe and respectful environment. The organization is now tasked with rebuilding trust and morale among its teams while implementing measures to prevent future incidents of bullying.
As the case concludes, the focus shifts to the broader implications for leadership practices within Oranga Tamariki and similar organizations. The need for effective management training and a clear policy on workplace behaviour has never been more evident.
