Southern South Island Farmers Set to Elect New Director
Beef + Lamb New Zealand is preparing for an election to fill the farmer director position for the Southern South Island district. The election follows the retirement of current director Geoffrey Young, who is stepping down by rotation on March 17, 2024. Three candidates are vying for the role: Simon Davies, Glen McDonald, and Matt McRae.
Voters will have access to detailed information about the candidates starting early next month, allowing them to make informed decisions. To qualify for voting, a farmer must have owned at least 250 sheep, or 50 beef cattle, or 100 dairy cattle as of June 30, 2023. Additionally, they must reside within the respective electorate and be registered on the Beef + Lamb electoral roll.
Online voting for this election will open next month and will remain accessible until March 12, 2024. This election underscores the importance of farmer representation in the governance of the agricultural sector in New Zealand, particularly for those in the Southern South Island region.
With the retirement of Young, the newly elected director will play a crucial role in shaping policies that impact farmers and the wider agricultural community. As the election date approaches, the focus will be on how each candidate plans to address the challenges facing farmers today.
