Teen’s Death Sparks Concerns Over Unrestricted Internet Access

An inquest into the death of a teenager in the Bay of Plenty has raised serious concerns about the risks associated with unrestricted internet access. The youth, who was found deceased after disappearing overnight, had engaged with violent pornography and conducted “troubling” internet searches just a day before his death in 2024. Coroner Michael Robb suggested that the young individual may have attempted to imitate content he encountered online.

Robb’s report indicated, “I consider he [was] in some way endeavouring to mirror what he had seen in the internet searches in some kind of experimental or exploration context.” This case has drawn attention to the broader implications of internet safety, particularly for minors.

Calls for Action on Internet Regulations

The inquest highlighted a significant issue regarding the accessibility of harmful content on the internet. Coroner Robb referenced Australia’s recent decision to implement restrictions on social media access for children under 16. He noted that the New Zealand government is currently considering similar measures.

“It does not appear to have been his accessing or ability to access social media platforms, but rather the open access to the internet that is available to any person, child or adult, who has access to any internet-enabled device,” Robb stated. He emphasized that while parental controls can be applied to individual devices, they are often insufficient in preventing tech-savvy youths from circumventing these restrictions.

Robb pointed out that the teenager’s tragic death underscores the urgent need for more comprehensive internet access restrictions. He remarked, “While controls can be applied to the device, the risk remains that tech-savvy youth can work around this.”

The coroner acknowledged the difficulty in understanding the potential harms associated with unregulated internet access. He stated, “I acknowledge it can be difficult to imagine what the potential harms are, what might be searched, what might spark interest in the young, but in my view, [the teenager’s] avoidable death represents an example of the dangers of open internet access.”

Robb’s comments reflect a growing concern among officials and parents alike regarding the consequences of unrestricted online content. He concluded, “It represents the reality that the consequences can ultimately lead to the preventable loss of a young life.”
