Australia Clinches Ashes with Tense Victory in Adelaide Test
Australia secured the Ashes for the 2023 series following a gripping eight-wicket victory against England in the third Test held in Adelaide. This win allowed the Australian team to retain the iconic trophy with two matches still remaining in the five-match series.
On the final day of play, Australia commenced needing four wickets to ensure the Ashes remained in their possession, with England resuming at a score of 6-207. The visitors faced a daunting target of 435 runs, which would have required them to set a world record for a successful run chase.
Australia’s paceman Mitchell Starc played a crucial role, claiming three of the last four wickets to stem England’s resilient fightback. In the morning session, Starc struck by dismissing Jamie Smith, who contributed 60 runs to the total. England’s efforts saw them add 102 runs before lunch, narrowing the equation: Australia needed three wickets to secure the Ashes, while England required 126 runs to prolong the series.
As pressure mounted from England’s lower order and Australia’s bowling attack missed veteran spinner Nathan Lyon due to a hamstring injury, Starc delivered under pressure. He had already been named player of the match in the previous Tests played in Perth and Brisbane. Starc dismissed Will Jacks and Jofra Archer before Scott Boland wrapped up the innings. England was ultimately all out for 352, handing Australia an 82-run victory.
Following the match, Alex Carey, who received the man of the match award, expressed pride in performing in his hometown of Adelaide. “It’s been a lot of fun, this Adelaide crowd has been something special,” Carey said. “Very special moment, having the family, to score a hundred and look up to the heavens was very special.”
Australia’s captain, Pat Cummins, reflected on the achievement, stating it felt “pretty awesome” for a team that had been focused on this moment for a long time. The result leaves England grappling with the pressures of the series and intensifies scrutiny on coach Brendon McCullum and captain Ben Stokes.
Former England captain Geoff Boycott criticized the leadership following the loss, suggesting that the “Baz-ball” strategy had reached its limits. In a column, Boycott stated, “Hubris has taken over from common sense… If what you are doing isn’t working then stop digging. Change is absolutely necessary to step up to the next level.”
Stokes acknowledged the disappointment of the series defeat, remarking, “The dream is now over, which is incredibly disappointing. Everyone is hurting and quite emotional… Losing those three wickets at the back end of yesterday set us back.” He emphasized that despite the setback, the team had shown promise and that they would continue to fight.
Looking ahead, the fourth Test is set to commence on December 26, 2023, in Melbourne. The outcome of this match will be crucial for England as they aim to regain momentum in the series.
