Carlin Davison Joins Wellington Saints, Leaving Taranaki Airs

The Taranaki Airs have faced a significant setback ahead of the new season as star forward Carlin Davison announced his transfer to the Wellington Saints for the upcoming National Basketball League (NBL) season. This unexpected move marks a pivotal moment for both Davison and the Airs, as he has been a central figure in the team’s rise over the past six years.

Davison, who debuted for the Airs at just 16 years old in 2020, has been instrumental in the team’s success, helping them reach the playoffs four times. His journey transformed him from a promising young talent into one of the league’s standout forwards. Reflecting on his time with the Airs, he acknowledged the emotional challenge of leaving his home province.

“It sucks leaving home,” Davison stated from Auckland, where he is currently playing for the New Zealand Breakers. “I didn’t really want to leave, but I felt like I needed a change. Wellington came to the table with a great offer and really showed they wanted me there.”

Despite the surprise of his transfer, Davison expressed hope that he might return to Taranaki in the future. He emphasized his belief that he still has much to contribute to the sport, although he hinted at dissatisfaction with the direction of the Airs, stating that the way the club had been moving “didn’t sit right with me.”

Under Davison’s influence, Taranaki has transformed from a struggling team to a competitive force. Prior to his arrival, the Airs frequently finished at the bottom of the league standings, often winning only a few games each season. Since 2020, they have consistently qualified for the playoffs, solidifying their status as contenders.

“We went from being at the bottom to making finals four times in six years,” Davison remarked. “It’s been about the experience and seeing how far the club has come. Being part of that growth has been really special.”

His performance has evolved through increased court time, and he credits improvements in his shooting, athleticism, and overall understanding of the game for his success. “I’ve just grown, and I hope that’s reflected in what I’ve been able to give the team,” he said.

As he prepares to don the Saints jersey, Davison aims to bring his trademark energy and excitement to his new team. “It probably won’t feel like home, but I’ll bring the same game I always bring,” he noted. He is eager to contribute to the Saints as they defend their title.

Off the court, Davison has been actively collaborating with the Saints’ management and has secured an apartment in time for their first home game on April 12, 2024. The Saints’ head coach, Aaron Young, described the signing as “massive” for the club, highlighting Davison’s continuous growth as a player.

In a statement, Saints’ chief executive Jordan Mills expressed confidence that Wellington offers an ideal environment for Davison’s continued development while enhancing the team’s championship aspirations.

As the NBL season approaches, the Airs will face the Manawatū team in their opening match scheduled for April 9 in Palmerston North. The shift in Davison’s allegiance adds an intriguing narrative to the season ahead, both for the player and for the teams involved.
