Gael Monfils Exits ASB Classic After Upset by Fabian Marozsan
Defending champion Gael Monfils was eliminated in the opening round of the ASB Classic in Auckland on January 9, 2024, after a hard-fought match against Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan. Monfils, 39, who made headlines in 2025 by becoming the oldest title winner on the ATP tour since 1977, faced a disappointing start this year, losing 7-5, 3-6, 4-6 in a match that lasted two hours.
This encounter mirrored last year’s opening round, where Monfils also fell to Marozsan in a closely contested three-set battle. The night session began with high hopes for the French player, who showcased moments of his classic style early on. Monfils took the first set with a brilliant forehand winner, signaling a potential repeat of his past success.
As the match progressed, Marozsan began to increase his intensity, breaking Monfils early in the second set. The shift in momentum proved pivotal, as Monfils struggled to regain control. Despite his valiant efforts, the defending champion found himself trailing in the decisive set, ultimately succumbing to Marozsan’s tenacity.
The atmosphere at Stanley Street was electric as Monfils exited the court to a standing ovation from the crowd, a testament to his legacy and the affection held by fans. His departure marks a poignant moment in his career, as this may be his final appearance at the ASB Classic.
The result highlights the unpredictable nature of tennis and the emergence of new talent, as Marozsan continues to establish himself on the ATP circuit. For Monfils, the journey may have ended sooner than hoped, but his contributions to the sport remain significant. The ASB Classic, a key event in the tennis calendar, will continue as players vie for the title in Auckland.
