Laura Harris Equals Fastest 50 Record in Sparks’ Victory
Australian cricketer Laura Harris made a remarkable impact in the Super Smash tournament by equalling the record for the fastest fifty in its history. Her explosive performance led the Sparks to a bonus point victory over the Canterbury Magicians, securing a six-wicket win at Molyneux Oval in Alexandra on March 10, 2024.
Harris, who plays for the Sydney Thunder, scored a stunning 52 runs off just 17 balls. She reached her half-century in only 15 deliveries, tying the tournament record. In a thrilling moment, she narrowly missed hitting a six on the ball prior to reaching 50, which would have made her the outright record holder for the fastest fifty.
Her explosive knock propelled the Sparks to chase down Canterbury’s total of 145 runs, finishing with a score of 146 for the loss of four wickets in just 14.5 overs. The match lasted a mere 67 minutes, showcasing Harris’s ability to dominate with her batting.
Harris’s performance was not only a personal achievement but also a reminder of her talent to fans in New Zealand. In her innings, she hit four sixes—equaling the total number of sixes the Sparks managed in the previous season—and six fours. Her aggressive approach during the power play was particularly noteworthy, as she blasted two consecutive sixes, demonstrating both skill and power.
Reflecting on her innings, Harris commented to TVNZ+, “I’m always in a hurry,” and joked about her preference for hitting boundaries over running between them. She recounted one of her sixes off Magicians captain Lea Tahuhu as “one of the best I’ve ever hit.”
Even after Harris’s dismissal, the Sparks remained in control. Captain Polly Inglis contributed an unbeaten 20 runs, helping to secure the victory without any undue pressure.
In contrast, the Canterbury Magicians struggled to build momentum despite a solid start. They lost two early wickets, with Natalie Cox and Kate Anderson both dismissed, leaving the team at 15 runs. However, a partnership between Izzy Sharp and Jodie Dean stabilized their innings, with Sharp finishing on an impressive 65 not out from 46 balls.
Despite their efforts, the Magicians were unable to match the Sparks’ scoring pace. Sharp and Dean’s stand provided some hope, but the total proved insufficient against Harris’s explosive batting performance.
The final scoreboard reflected the Sparks’ dominance: Sparks 146-4 (Laura Harris 52 off 17 balls, Felicity Robertson 22, Caitlin Blakely 22, Polly Inglis 20 not out; Missy Banks 2-23, Gabby Sullivan 2-31) defeated Canterbury Magicians 145-6 (Izzy Sharp 65 not out off 46 balls, Jodie Dean 34; Emma Black 2-19) by six wickets.
Harris’s record-equalling feat not only highlights her exceptional talent but also sets an exciting tone for the remainder of the Super Smash season, leaving fans eager for more thrilling performances.
