Nick Kelly’s Stellar Performance Leads Wellington Firebirds to Victory
At Bay Oval in Tauranga, the Wellington Firebirds secured a vital victory over the Northern Brave, winning by 13 runs in a thrilling encounter on January 3, 2024. The Firebirds posted a formidable total of 194 runs for the loss of three wickets in their allotted 20 overs, largely thanks to a stellar performance from captain Nick Kelly, who scored an impressive 95 not out off 58 balls.
Kelly’s innings included 11 fours and three sixes, showcasing his ability to dominate the bowlers at crucial moments. Alongside him, Tim Robinson contributed significantly with a brisk 54 runs off just 30 deliveries. This win was particularly important for the Firebirds, who had faced back-to-back defeats against the Central Stags and Auckland Aces, making this match a critical juncture in their Super Smash season.
The Firebirds’ total of 194-3 proved to be a challenging target for the Brave. They struggled in their chase, managing to score 181 runs before being bowled out in 19.4 overs. The Brave’s innings saw Brett Hampton top-scoring with 47 runs off 32 balls, while Scott Kuggeleijn added a quick 33 off 17.
Wellington’s bowlers were instrumental in maintaining pressure throughout the match. Yahya Zeb was particularly impactful, taking three wickets for 29 runs in 3.4 overs. His performance was complemented by Peter Younghusband, who claimed two wickets for 27 runs and also took two crucial catches in the outfield. Logan van Beek and Jesse Tashkoff each added two wickets to their tally, contributing to a disciplined bowling effort.
The match began with the Firebirds losing opener Tom Blundell early, but the partnership between Kelly and Robinson was crucial. Together, they added 92 runs for the second wicket, setting a solid platform for the innings. Kelly’s remarkable knock came at a time when the Firebirds needed it most, as they had not won a match since November 8, 2023, spanning eight games across all formats.
Reflecting on the victory, Kelly expressed relief at breaking the team’s losing streak. He acknowledged his previous struggles in T20 cricket, where he had only managed to score a best of 85 in 90 matches prior to this game. This performance not only marked his highest T20 score but also highlighted his potential to lead the team effectively.
The Brave’s chase started poorly, losing opener Katene Clarke on the first ball, caught by Tashkoff off van Beek’s bowling. Despite some aggressive batting from Hampton, the Brave constantly found themselves behind the required run rate. Tashkoff’s left-arm spin proved particularly effective, as he took two wickets in quick succession, including that of Black Caps test squad call-up Kristian Clarke.
As the Brave’s innings progressed, it became clear that the target was steep. Kuggeleijn’s late innings fireworks provided a glimmer of hope, but it was ultimately not enough. Wellington’s bowlers executed their plans well, with van Beek delivering a calm penultimate over, leaving the Brave needing 16 runs off the final over.
With this win, the Wellington Firebirds are poised to head to Auckland for a rematch against the Aces, now with renewed confidence and momentum. The victory not only boosts their standings in the league but also serves as a reminder of their potential when performing at their best.
