In an exciting weekend of local cricket, the Owaka team secured a decisive victory over Milton, while Waihola achieved an unprecedented win against Clutha Comets. Milton was bowled out for just 137 runs in the 38th over, setting the stage for Owaka to chase down the target in under 27 overs.

Owaka’s opening bowler, Will Clark, made an immediate impact by claiming two early wickets, putting pressure on Milton’s batting lineup. Despite this, a strong partnership developed between Braden Adams and Corey Bradley, who combined for a significant 97-run third-wicket partnership. The duo ran effectively between the wickets, guiding Milton to 86 for two at the drinks break. Unfortunately for Milton, Adams fell just short of his half-century, edging a delivery from Jeremy Gray to keeper Reece Pullar after scoring 49 runs. Bradley also departed shortly thereafter for 42 runs, as Gray and Francis Parker dismantled the lower order to restrict Milton’s total.

In response, Owaka’s chase began with Gray hitting a six, but they quickly found themselves in trouble when Bradley claimed his wicket with the very next ball. The situation worsened for Owaka as they slipped to 16 for four following two more wickets from Jacob Jenkins. However, Sam Bastin and Parker steadied the innings, forming an unbeaten partnership of 122 runs that led Owaka to victory. Parker finished with an impressive 60 not out, while Bastin contributed an unbeaten 50 runs. Bradley emerged as Milton’s standout bowler, with figures of two for 30.

In another match, the Clutha Comets faced a staggering defeat at the hands of Waihola, which may go down as one of the most significant losses in local cricket history. The Comets, fielding only nine players, struggled to put runs on the board, with Connor Davey top-scoring with a mere three runs. Waihola’s bowlers dominated, with Jared Hayes taking five wickets for just five runs, and Jared Cunningham complementing this by securing two wickets.

Waihola’s batting effort was equally swift, as Dylan Bungard and Craig Gordon successfully chased down the target in just 10 balls, sealing a memorable victory. Following this match, the two teams engaged in a friendly T20 game to round off the day.

In the final match, the Kaitangata Kings clashed with the Valley Stingers in a thrilling contest. The Valley team set a formidable target of 245 for five, with Lachlan Johnston leading the score with 60 runs. However, the Kings proved resilient, with Allan Thomson anchoring their innings with an unbeaten 104 runs. He finished the game in style, hitting a six and a four to guide Kaitangata to victory in the final over, winning by two wickets.

This weekend’s matches showcased not only the competitive spirit of local cricket but also the remarkable performances that can turn the tide in any game.
