Wellington Phoenix Shocks Sydney FC with 2-0 Victory
Wellington Phoenix secured a surprising 2-0 victory over second-placed Sydney FC at Allianz Stadium on Sunday, March 3, 2024. Goals from Carlo Armiento and Isaac Hughes propelled the Phoenix to their third consecutive unbeaten match, narrowing the gap to just six points from A-League Men leaders Auckland FC.
The match took a crucial turn when Sydney midfielder Rhys Youlley was sent off just before halftime for a dangerous tackle on Ramy Najjarine. Youlley caught Najjarine on the ankle with a studs-up challenge, forcing Sydney to continue the match with ten players. The dismissal shifted the momentum in favor of the Phoenix, who capitalized on their numerical advantage.
New signing Bill Tuiloma made his debut for Wellington, coming off the bench in the 75th minute. Tuiloma, who has 45 caps for New Zealand’s national team, returned to the Phoenix after a lengthy career abroad. His experience helped reinforce the Phoenix defense as they sought to maintain their lead.
Wellington broke the deadlock in the 29th minute when a free-kick from Armiento deflected off the Sydney defensive wall, leaving goalkeeper Harrison Devenish-Meares wrong-footed. The Phoenix doubled their lead in the 63rd minute, with Hughes rising to meet a cross from captain Alex Rufer. Hughes celebrated by kicking the corner flag adorned with the Sydney FC logo, inciting discontent among the home fans.
Goalkeeper Eamonn McCarron, 18, continued to impress in goal for the Phoenix, achieving his second clean sheet in five appearances. McCarron showcased his bravery by claiming the ball under pressure from Ben Garrucio and made a crucial save to deny Tiago Quintal shortly after. Sydney thought they had pulled a goal back in stoppage time, but the effort was disallowed due to an offside position by Rhyan Grant.
The victory not only enhances the Phoenix’s position in the league, now up to eighth place, just two points shy of the top six but also benefits Auckland FC by preventing Sydney from overtaking them for the top spot.
A Bright Future for Wellington Phoenix
With seven points garnered from their last three games, Wellington Phoenix appears to be on an upward trajectory. Their squad looks notably stronger with the additions of Tuiloma and Sander Kartum, alongside key players such as Tim Payne, Paulo Retre, and Nikola Mileusnic returning from injury.
The Phoenix will face a quick turnaround, challenging the Newcastle Jets at McDonald Jones Stadium on Friday, March 8, 2024. The Jets, currently in third place, recently defeated Wellington 3-1 in December and have been in formidable form, winning four of their last five matches. A victory for the Phoenix could see them rise into the top four and further solidify their competitive standing in the league.
