Australia Claims 4-1 Ashes Victory After Thrilling Final Test
Australia secured a commanding 4-1 series victory in the Ashes after defeating England by five wickets in the fifth and final Test held in Sydney on December 28, 2023. The hosts bowled England out for 342, setting a target of 160 runs for victory. Despite a tense chase marked by falling wickets and a contentious DRS review, Australia reached 161 for 5 in 31 overs, sealing the series with a strong performance.
The match concluded with a remarkable farewell for veteran batsman Usman Khawaja, who retired at the age of 39. Khawaja entered the crease when Australia was struggling at 92 for 3 and received a guard of honour from the England players. He made a brief but memorable contribution, scoring six runs before being bowled by Josh Tongue. As he left the field for the final time, he knelt and kissed the turf beneath a “Thank you Uzzy” sign, leaving a lasting impression on fans and teammates alike.
The series started strongly for Australia, with victories in the first three Tests, but England aimed to narrow the margin after their win on Boxing Day in Melbourne. Khawaja’s retirement was a poignant moment, but the match’s excitement continued as Australia maintained their composure under pressure.
Mitchell Starc was instrumental in the final Test, taking two key wickets, including that of Jacob Bethell, who scored a remarkable 154 runs. Starc finished the series with an impressive total of 31 wickets at an average of 19.9, earning him the Player of the Series award.
On the last day, England resumed their innings at 302 for 8, eventually bowled out for 342, which gave Australia a 159-run lead with two and a half sessions remaining. The Australian innings began briskly, with Travis Head contributing 29 runs, bringing his series total to 629 runs, including three centuries.
Tension mounted in the Australian innings due to a controversial DRS decision. An appeal for caught behind against Jake Weatherald was turned down by the on-field umpire, leading England to challenge the decision. Despite replays suggesting a faint edge, the third umpire, Kumar Dharmasena, ruled there was insufficient evidence to overturn the call, leaving the England team visibly frustrated.
With the match hanging in the balance, Alex Carey and Cameron Green steadied the ship, guiding Australia to victory. Carey finished unbeaten on 16, while Green contributed 22, ensuring a safe passage to the target.
The final Test attracted a record crowd of 211,032 over five days, setting a new attendance mark at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The excitement of the series, alongside Khawaja’s emotional farewell, will be remembered as Australia celebrated their Ashes triumph.
