Community Champion Michael Rowse Honored for 18 Years of Service

Michael Rowse, a prominent figure in east Auckland’s community radio scene, has been awarded the Community Hero Award for his remarkable 18-year dedication to East FM. This recognition, presented by the Times, highlights individuals who have made significant contributions to their communities. Rowse’s commitment and passion have left an indelible mark on local broadcasting and community engagement.

Rowse founded Howick Village Radio in 2008, which later transformed into East FM. Over nearly two decades, he has served as the station manager, where he has cultivated a vibrant platform for local talent and community events. Recently, Rowse announced his decision to step down from his managerial role, although he will continue to support the station.

Reflecting on his experience, Rowse expressed, “East FM has been my baby. I’ve poured my heart and soul into the station and watched with pride as it grew from success to success.” His leadership has not only fostered friendships but also helped launch numerous careers in the local media landscape.

The nomination came from PJ Taylor, who praised Rowse’s unwavering dedication. “He’s been wholeheartedly dedicated to something he created, and we all jumped on the bandwagon to enjoy what we do – play music and get involved in community events and activities,” Taylor stated. “Mike has led us magnificently. Doing something for East FM every day voluntarily for 18 years is legendary dedication.”

Rowse’s impact extends beyond the airwaves. He has been a key player in various community initiatives and events, enhancing the cultural fabric of the region. His efforts have inspired many, creating a sense of belonging among residents.

Following Rowse’s departure, Tony King, an original DJ at East FM, has taken over as the new station manager. The transition marks a new chapter for the station, which continues to thrive due to Rowse’s foundational work.

The Community Hero Award includes a $50 gift card from New World Howick, along with a feature in the Times newspaper and on its website. This initiative aims to spotlight local heroes who selflessly contribute to the well-being of their communities.

Community members are encouraged to nominate deserving individuals by submitting a brief description of their contributions, including contact information and a high-resolution photo. This recognition not only honors the efforts of local heroes but also inspires others to take action in their communities.
