Police Confirm Stabbing in Incident Involving Shooting in Waitārere Beach
A man found dead following a shooting incident in Waitārere Beach on January 14, 2024, was actually the victim of a stabbing, according to police. The deceased, identified as 60-year-old Benjamin Harry Timmins, was discovered alongside three others who sustained gunshot wounds. Initially, authorities reported that all individuals had suffered gunshot injuries, but subsequent examinations have clarified the circumstances.
Central District crime manager Inspector Craig Sheridan confirmed that one individual at the scene had a wound consistent with a stabbing. The three survivors—comprised of a 46-year-old woman and two men aged 17 and 21—remain hospitalized in stable condition. Police have conducted interviews with these individuals as part of their ongoing investigation.
The situation escalated early on January 9, when officers responded to a family harm-related incident at the same property. During that event, Timmins was arrested and charged with assault on a family member. He was scheduled to appear in court on the day of the shooting.
At the scene, police discovered a firearm, along with dismantled gun parts and ammunition. These items were seized hours before the discovery of Timmins’ body and the injuries sustained by the others involved in the incident.
In a heartfelt tribute on social media, Timmins’ sister described him as her “rock,” “friend,” and “protector.” She expressed deep sorrow over his death, stating, “I will miss him,” and referred to him as “the last of the good old boys.” She shared that he was a beloved father and brother, known for his humor and kindness.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, aiming to uncover more details regarding the events that transpired on that tragic day.
