School Olympic Program Celebrates 24 Athletes Joining National Teams

Doha recently witnessed a significant milestone as the School Olympic Program (SOP) held a ceremony honouring 24 athletes who have joined Qatar’s national teams. This event, which took place on March 15, 2024, celebrated both male and female athletes identified through the SOP, showcasing their achievements across various sports disciplines.

Recognizing Emerging Talent

The ceremony was attended by prominent figures from the Qatar Olympic Committee, including Mohamed bin Yousef Al Mana, First Vice President; Dr. Thani bin Abdulrahman Al Kuwari, Second Vice President; and Jassim bin Rashid Al Buenain, Secretary-General. Also present was Sheikh Khalifa bin Khalid Al Thani, Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the SOP, along with representatives from various sports federations.

The athletes honoured during the event have successfully represented Qatar in seven sports: football, hockey, rugby, volleyball, shooting, and tennis. Their participation underscores the program’s role in identifying and nurturing talent, with a focus on future competitive stages.

Support and Vision for Qatari Sports

During the ceremony, Al Mana expressed gratitude to H E Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, President of the Qatar Olympic Committee, for his unwavering support of the SOP. He highlighted that this support reflects a clear vision for sustainable investment in Qatari sports, aimed at developing young athletes within an integrated framework.

Al Buenain added that the SOP has established itself as a cornerstone in discovering sporting talent across various disciplines. The athletes recognised have demonstrated exceptional skills, showcasing their readiness for higher levels of competition. He noted that sports federations increasingly depend on the program to supply promising talents for national teams, indicating a successful model of collaboration between schools and federations.

In his address, Sheikh Khalifa remarked, “This gathering is not merely a recognition ceremony; it represents a milestone in evaluating and acknowledging the success of the Talent Identification Project, one of the executive initiatives within the SOP.” He elaborated that the project serves as an organized link between schools, sports federations, and national teams, establishing a clear pathway for athlete development.

Furthermore, the role of the Ministry of Education was emphasized as pivotal in enhancing the school environment to support talent identification. This collaboration aims to empower physical education teachers to identify and nominate potential athletes based on established criteria.

Abdulrahman Al Muftah, Executive Director of the SOP, reinforced that the program is a key pillar in Qatar’s talent identification system. He noted that the achievement of 24 athletes joining national teams reflects the success of the mechanisms in place for scouting, development, and follow-up.

Al Muftah explained that the SOP extends beyond mere talent identification. It operates through an integrated approach that includes continuous technical evaluation and coordination with sports federations, ensuring a smooth transition from school to competitive environments. This methodology is vital in building a sustainable sports foundation that supports the future of national teams in Qatar.
