Authorities are intensifying their search efforts for 66-year-old Graham Garnett, who went missing during a tramp in the Baton/Ellis River area in New Zealand. Garnett was expected to return on December 30, 2023, but has not been seen since. He is described as approximately 177 cm tall, weighing around 100 kg, with grey hair.

The local police are employing advanced radar technology in their search, as stated by Sergeant Jonny Evans. To facilitate the operation, several areas in the Baton Valley will be closed to the public on December 31. The closures include:

– Wilkinson Track
– Baton Saddle
– Loveridge Spur Route
– Cowin Spur Track
– Wharepapa Arthur Range, from Mount Star through to the Twins
– Walking track to Flanagan’s Hut

Sgt Evans emphasized the importance of maintaining safety and urged the public to avoid the search zones.

In addition to the radar, authorities will utilize Recco detecting equipment, which is designed to locate individuals buried under snow or debris. “We are keen to hear from anyone who we haven’t spoken with yet, who was in the Baton/Ellis River area from the afternoon of December 26, particularly anyone who was around Flanagan’s Hut,” said Sgt Evans, highlighting the need for community assistance in the ongoing search.

The search for Garnett is not the only operation currently underway in the region. Further south, police are also looking for Connor Purvis, a 20-year-old who has been missing since he set out to climb Mt Huxley on December 26. The circumstances surrounding both cases have raised concerns among local communities, as authorities work diligently to locate the missing individuals.

As the search for Garnett and Purvis continues, the involvement of technology and community cooperation remains crucial. The local police are committed to ensuring the safety of all those involved and hope for a positive outcome in both cases.
