Selwyn-Christchurch Train Trial Set to Assess Commuter Demand
A trial commuter rail service connecting Selwyn townships to Christchurch is being planned by the Tawera Malvern Community Board. This initiative aims to evaluate the demand for passenger travel along the existing Midland rail line, with a one-off event scheduled for later this year. The proposed service would link communities such as Springfield, Kirwee, and Darfield directly to Christchurch.
Community board member Samantha Samuel emphasized that the proposal remains in its early stages. “The trial is the result of community feedback calling for a commuter service in the face of increasing traffic from a growing population,” she noted. The initiative leverages existing infrastructure, aiming to stimulate discussions about a permanent commuter train service in the future.
Phased Approach for the Trial
The plan for the trial involves a phased approach, starting with a single express train service. This initial event will serve as a pilot to gather data and develop a business case for a more regular commuter service. “Starting off with a one-off event will allow us to gather information and hopefully build a business case for commuter trains,” Samuel explained.
Key aspects of the trial process include understanding the associated costs and addressing the crucial question of funding. Recently, Mainland Rail has begun rolling out event express trains. An inaugural journey between Christchurch and Invercargill in January was sold out, with tickets priced at $149 for a one-way fare or $298 for a return trip.
Samuel also mentioned that Mainland Rail is considering using Rolleston as a connection point for future events in Christchurch. She has been collaborating with them to explore extending services as far as Springfield. “We’re still working on a feasible event option for the community, and there are lots of different factors to consider, such as timing, cost, and safety,” she added.
Community Support and Future Prospects
During a recent community board meeting, Springfield resident Simon Williams expressed strong support for the proposal. He believes a commuter rail service could significantly benefit the growing population, particularly residents in areas like West Melton and Darfield. “There’s a huge need, in my view, for trains into Christchurch from here. Springfield is the ideal start and end point,” he stated, noting the town’s historical connection to rail services.
The timing of the proposed express train service to the upcoming Six60 concert at the new One New Zealand Stadium at Te Kaha on May 16 faced hurdles. Samuel indicated that logistical challenges, including the need for the train to leave Springfield by 15:45 to reach the venue by 17:00, made it unfeasible. Additionally, as the concert sold out in early February, the timing was not suitable for integrating the event with train services.
For the upcoming trial, Samuel is focusing on organizing a daytime event to facilitate community engagement. “I am trying to work towards having something in place by May, but it’s a work in progress,” she affirmed.
The trial represents a significant opportunity for the Selwyn community to explore the potential benefits of a commuter rail service, which could ease traffic congestion and provide a sustainable transport alternative for residents.
