Urgent Rescue Efforts Underway for 53 Stranded Pilot Whales

Fifty-three pilot whales have stranded on Farewell Spit this evening, leading to a swift and urgent response from conservation teams and local volunteers. The whales were first spotted earlier in the afternoon swimming in shallow waters, a behavior that signaled their movement toward the sand spit.

Local medics were rapidly deployed to the scene, collaborating with the Department of Conservation, boat crews, and representatives from Manawhenua Ki Mohua. According to Project Jonah, a marine mammal protection organization, despite the best efforts of these teams, the whales have stranded across two sites on Farewell Spit.

As conditions proved challenging due to the area’s exposed and windy environment, volunteers played a critical role in assisting with the rescue efforts. They worked to keep the stranded whales cool, a vital task as temperatures rose. Support operations are set to continue until sunset, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.

Project Jonah has advised potential volunteers to wear wetsuits, given the windy conditions. They also recommend bringing personal supplies, as Farewell Spit is an isolated location, making logistics difficult.
