Wellington Phoenix Dashes Sydney FC’s Title Hopes with 2-0 Victory
Wellington Phoenix achieved a surprising 2-0 victory over second-placed Sydney FC at Allianz Stadium on October 22, 2023. This win marked a significant boost for the Phoenix, who are now just six points behind A-League Men leaders Auckland FC. The match showcased the Phoenix’s resilience and improved squad depth, particularly with the introduction of new signing Bill Tuiloma.
The game shifted dramatically late in the first half when Sydney midfielder Rhys Youlley was sent off for a reckless tackle on Ramy Najjarine. The challenge, which caught Najjarine high on the ankle, left Sydney to chase the game with only ten players. This incident catalyzed a change in momentum that the Phoenix capitalized on effectively.
Phoenix broke the deadlock in the 29th minute. A free-kick taken by Carlo Armiento deflected off the Sydney wall, wrong-footing goalkeeper Harrison Devenish-Meares. The Phoenix doubled their lead in the 63rd minute when Isaac Hughes scored his second goal in as many games, heading in a cross from captain Alex Rufer. Hughes celebrated by kicking the corner flag adorned with the Sydney FC logo, a gesture that incited displeasure among the home supporters.
Tuiloma, who joined the Phoenix after a lengthy career abroad, entered the match in the 75th minute. His experience bolstered the Phoenix’s defense, which had already shown improvement under coach Giancarlo Italiano, who opted for a back four for the first time this season. Despite the absence of regular goalkeeper Josh Oluwayemi, Eamonn McCarron performed commendably. The young keeper claimed his second clean sheet in five appearances, demonstrating bravery and skill, particularly when he denied a close-range effort from Tiago Quintal.
As the match approached stoppage time, Sydney believed they had scored but the goal was disallowed for offside against Rhyan Grant, ensuring the Phoenix’s clean sheet remained intact.
This victory not only improves Wellington’s standings—bringing them to eighth place, just two points shy of the top six—but it also complicates Sydney FC’s title aspirations. A victory for Sydney would have allowed them to leapfrog into first place, putting added pressure on Auckland FC.
Looking ahead, the Phoenix face a challenging matchup against the Newcastle Jets at McDonald Jones Stadium on October 27, 2023. The Jets, currently positioned third, recently defeated the Phoenix 3-1 in December and have won four of their last five matches. A victory for Wellington could propel them into the top four, making the upcoming match crucial for their playoff ambitions.
Overall, the Phoenix’s recent performances, bolstered by strategic signings and returning players, are signaling a promising turn in their season. With newfound momentum, they are focused on climbing the A-League Men standings as they approach the halfway point of the season.
