Auckland Prison Releases Footage of Guard’s 2022 Fall Online
Footage depicting a prison guard’s fall from a height at Auckland’s Paremoremo Prison has been removed from online platforms after it was circulated without authorization. The incident, which occurred in July 2022, involved a prisoner who was exhibiting aggressive behavior towards staff members.
The Department of Corrections confirmed that the guard fell during the altercation and was promptly taken to the hospital due to injuries sustained from the fall. In a statement, Auckland Prison general manager Stephen Parr provided details about the incident and the subsequent support offered to the staff member.
“Following the fall, the staff member received immediate medical attention and was provided with comprehensive support during their recovery,” Parr stated. He added that the guard returned to work just three weeks after the incident and remains a current employee of the Corrections department.
The dissemination of the footage has raised concerns regarding privacy and the handling of sensitive incidents within correctional facilities. The Department of Corrections emphasized the importance of maintaining confidentiality and safeguarding the well-being of its staff.
While the incident highlights the challenges faced by correctional officers, it also underscores the need for proper protocols when dealing with aggressive behavior from inmates. The Department has reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of both staff and prisoners within the facility.
Parr concluded by stating that measures are in place to support staff who encounter difficult situations regularly. The department aims to create a safe working environment, acknowledging the demanding nature of the job in a correctional setting.
As incidents like this come to light, they prompt discussions about the overall safety measures in place within prisons and the broader implications for correctional staff and inmate interactions.
