EB Games Proposes Closure of All New Zealand Stores
EB Games has announced plans to close its entire operation in New Zealand, including all retail stores and the New Zealand Distribution Centre. This proposal was communicated to employees through a letter from managing director Shane Stockwell, which has been reviewed by RNZ Online.
In the letter, Stockwell emphasized that this proposal is not yet finalized. He stated, “This proposal is not final, and no decision will be made until we have completed a full consultation process in good faith with affected team members.” The potential closure would result in the disestablishment of all roles within EB Games New Zealand, significantly impacting its workforce.
While details regarding the timeline for the consultation process remain unclear, the announcement comes at a time when the retail landscape is evolving rapidly. The gaming industry has faced significant changes due to shifts in consumer behavior and the rise of digital platforms, which have increasingly challenged traditional retail models.
EB Games has been a well-known name in the gaming sector, providing a range of products, including video games, consoles, and accessories. The proposed closure raises questions about the future of physical retail in New Zealand, particularly in a post-pandemic environment where online shopping has surged.
If the proposal goes ahead, it will mark the end of an era for EB Games in New Zealand, a market that has been part of the company’s operations for years. The consultation process will likely involve discussions with employees regarding their roles and potential support for those affected.
As the situation develops, stakeholders and customers alike will be watching closely to see how EB Games navigates this challenging transition. The outcome will not only affect the company’s employees but also the broader gaming community in New Zealand, which has relied on these stores for access to gaming products and services.
