Cooks, Niue Ensure Data Security After New Zealand Health Hack
Health authorities in the Cook Islands and Niue have assured residents that their clinical health data remains secure following a significant cyber breach of the ManageMyHealth patient portal in New Zealand. The breach, reported on 31 December, involved hackers threatening to release personal health information unless a ransom is paid.
In the Cook Islands, the Te Marae Ora Ministry of Health confirmed that an attempt to hack local data was detected but was unsuccessful. Health Secretary Bob Williams stated in an interview with CITV News that “the data remains secure,” emphasizing the resilience of their systems against unauthorized access.
Niue Health Officials Address Community Concerns
In Niue, the local Department of Health issued a community advisory, clarifying that they have not detected any breaches of internal clinical records. While the ManageMyHealth application is not utilized by the department, they do employ its partner, Medtech, for their internal systems. Officials caution, however, that Niue residents who have independently registered with the ManageMyHealth app could be at risk.
The health department remarked, “Although there is a low-risk impact on our community regarding the above breach in NZ, we are aware that there are some in our community that are registered and use the app.” Minerva Ikimau-McCurdy, the Director of Health in Niue, urged individuals using the app to stay informed as investigations progress in New Zealand. She stated, “If you are registered and use the ManageMyHealth app, please note that some of your information therein could potentially be affected.”
Ongoing Investigations and Security Updates
Authorities in both the Cook Islands and Niue have committed to providing updates as investigations continue. The operators of New Zealand’s ManageMyHealth have reported receiving “independent confirmation” from IT experts that the vulnerabilities in their system have been addressed.
As the situation evolves, health officials in both territories remain vigilant, ensuring that patient data is protected while also keeping the public informed about potential risks. The commitment to transparency and security is paramount as both regions navigate the implications of this cyber incident.
