Lightning Strikes Tree, Causes Severe Damage to Auckland Home
A significant storm struck Auckland’s North Shore on March 15, 2024, resulting in a large tree crashing onto a house in Hillcrest after being struck by lightning. Emergency services were alerted to the incident at approximately 5:12 PM, prompting a swift response from Fire and Emergency NZ.
Witnesses described the storm as sudden and violent. One neighbor recounted the moment the tree fell, stating that despite wearing headphones, they heard “the loudest bang” they had ever encountered. The impact caused a substantial hole in the roof of the affected home, prompting the occupants to evacuate for their safety.
Residents in the vicinity reported heavy rain and strong winds during the storm, which led to several other disturbances across the area. Fire and Emergency NZ confirmed that they were working to secure the site and assess any further risks associated with the fallen tree.
Authorities emphasized the importance of staying indoors during severe weather conditions and advised residents to remain alert for updates. As the storm continued to develop, emergency personnel were on standby to address any additional incidents that might arise in the region.
The quick response and coordination of local emergency services helped to minimize the potential for injuries. The incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of severe weather and the need for preparedness in such situations.
