New Zealand Condemns Violence in Iran’s Ongoing Protests
New Zealand’s Foreign Minister Winston Peters has expressed the country’s strong condemnation of the escalating violence and repression occurring in Iran. Protests began in the capital, Tehran, in late December 2022, driven by the nation’s severe economic challenges. These demonstrations have rapidly spread throughout the country, leading to a brutal crackdown by Iranian authorities.
Peters described the situation as “appalling,” highlighting the significant human rights violations reported by various organizations. He pointed to a crackdown by Iran’s security forces that has allegedly resulted in the deaths of thousands of protesters. The US-based human rights group Hrana reported that over 2,500 people, including at least 12 children, have been killed amid the unrest.
The government’s response has included an extensive internet blackout, which has severely limited the ability of Iranians to share information and verify incidents of violence. This suppression has made it increasingly difficult for the global community to assess the full scale of the situation. Peters emphasized that Iranians possess a fundamental right to peaceful protest, freedom of expression, and access to information—rights that are currently being denied.
On the international stage, US President Donald Trump has previously threatened military action in response to Iran’s harsh treatment of protesters. However, recent reports indicated that Trump believes the violence may be subsiding and that mass executions of protesters are unlikely at this time.
In light of the deteriorating security conditions, Peters has urged all New Zealand citizens in Iran to leave the country immediately. The New Zealand government continues to monitor the situation closely and stands in solidarity with those advocating for human rights and fundamental freedoms in Iran.
As the protests persist, the global community watches with concern, calling for accountability and a cessation of violence against civilians.
