Rotorua’s Whakarewarewa Forest Trail Upgraded with $500,000 Investment
A significant upgrade to Rotorua’s renowned Whakarewarewa Forest Loop mountain biking trail has transformed the route into a fully off-road experience, thanks to a total investment of $500,000. The announcement was made today by Tourism Minister Louise Upston, who highlighted the Government’s contribution of $250,000 to improve this popular cycling destination, one of New Zealand’s esteemed 23 Great Rides.
The Rotorua Lakes Council matched the Government’s funding with an additional $250,000 from its Annual Plan forest upgrades budget. According to a council media release, these upgrades will extend the loop trail by approximately 6 kilometers and reroute two sections to enhance the biking experience. The new paths will be situated within the forest, moving away from the existing Te Ara Ahi concrete cycleway that runs alongside State Highway 5.
The re-routing aims to create a more immersive experience for mountain bikers, allowing them to enjoy the natural beauty of the forest without the distractions of urban infrastructure. The changes are expected to attract more visitors to the area, bolstering local tourism and supporting the economy.
The Whakarewarewa Forest Loop trail is a well-loved spot for both locals and tourists, known for its stunning scenery and diverse terrain. The upgrades not only improve safety for riders but also enhance the overall experience, making it more appealing for all skill levels.
Minister Upston expressed her enthusiasm for the project, stating that investments like these are crucial for promoting outdoor activities and supporting New Zealand’s tourism sector. The Government’s focus on enhancing recreational infrastructure aligns with broader goals to encourage healthy lifestyles and environmental appreciation.
The partnership between the Government and the Rotorua Lakes Council showcases a commitment to developing sustainable tourism options. With the additional funding, the trail is poised to become a premier destination for mountain biking enthusiasts in New Zealand, further solidifying Rotorua’s reputation as a hub for outdoor adventure.
As the trail upgrades progress, local authorities are optimistic about the positive impact on the community and the environment. Visitors to Whakarewarewa Forest can look forward to a revitalized biking experience that celebrates the region’s natural beauty while promoting outdoor recreation.
