Search Intensifies for Missing Tramper Connor Purvis Near Lake Ōhau
A comprehensive search effort is currently underway for 20-year-old tramper Connor Purvis, who has been reported missing in the vicinity of Lake Ōhau in New Zealand’s Southern Alps. Purvis set out to ascend Mt Huxley around December 30, 2023, intending to descend via the Huxley River South Branch. His failure to return has raised significant concern among family and friends.
According to Sergeant Matt Sheat, the Otago Coastal Search and Rescue Coordinator, search teams have scoured huts and campsites in the area but have yet to find any trace of Purvis. The ongoing search operation involves multiple teams and resources, highlighting the urgency of locating the missing tramper.
Search Efforts Expand in Challenging Terrain
The search for Purvis is complicated by the rugged and often unpredictable terrain of the Southern Alps. Rescue teams are utilizing both ground and aerial search methods to cover as much area as possible. Local authorities are urging anyone who may have seen Purvis in the days leading up to his disappearance to come forward with information.
Purvis was last known to be well-prepared for his climb, equipped with necessary supplies and gear. His absence has prompted concerns regarding his safety, as the conditions in the mountains can change rapidly. The local community has rallied to support the search efforts, with volunteers joining professional rescuers in the hope of finding him safe.
The search operation remains active, with updates being provided as new information arises. Family members have expressed their gratitude to search teams and the community for their support during this challenging time. As the search continues, authorities remain hopeful that Purvis will be located soon.
Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Otago Coastal Search and Rescue team directly.
