Search Intensifies for Missing Tramper Connor Purvis Near Lake Ōhau
A significant search operation is currently underway for missing tramper Connor Purvis, aged 20, who has not been heard from since he set out to climb Mt Huxley in the Southern Alps on December 30, 2023. Purvis intended to descend via the Huxley River South Branch after his climb, but his failure to return has raised alarms among his friends and family.
According to Otago Coastal Search and Rescue Coordinator Sergeant Matt Sheat, search teams have scoured various huts and campsites in the area without finding any trace of Purvis. The search effort involves a wide range of personnel, including local volunteers and specialized search teams, who are combing through the rugged terrain around Lake Ōhau.
The search operation is being coordinated with local authorities and is focused on areas where Purvis may have travelled. The rugged nature of the landscape poses challenges for searchers, as conditions can change rapidly, and visibility may be limited in certain areas.
Sergeant Sheat expressed the urgency of the situation, stating that the teams remain hopeful but are aware of the difficulties posed by the environment. He has appealed to the public for any sightings or information that could aid in locating the missing tramper.
Authorities have urged anyone who may have been in the vicinity of Mt Huxley around the time Purvis was last seen to come forward with information. The search teams continue to work tirelessly, utilizing all available resources to find Purvis and ensure his safe return.
As the search progresses, the community is rallying together, hoping for positive news regarding Purvis’s whereabouts. The dedication of the search teams and the support from locals reflect the strong spirit of the region, as they remain committed to finding the young tramper.
