Emails sent to the electorate office of Police Minister Mark Mitchell indicate that staff members responded to allegations of sexual abuse against former Deputy Police Commissioner McSkimming. This occurred several months before Mitchell claims he was made aware of the accusations. The correspondence has raised questions about the transparency and communication within the ministerial offices.

In a statement released on March 15, 2024, Mitchell noted that 17 out of 36 emails detailing the allegations were sent to both his ministerial office and his Whangaparāoa electorate office. These emails originated from a woman who had previously been in a relationship with McSkimming.

According to Mitchell, a response was provided by a staff member in January 2024. This staff member, who is also Mitchell’s sister, clarified that the email in question was related to the ministerial role and would be forwarded to the appropriate parliamentary office for further action. He emphasized that “the correct process was followed, with those emails forwarded to the ministerial inbox for actioning.”

Mitchell has consistently stated that both he and his ministerial staff were unaware of these emails. He attributed this lack of knowledge to directives from the former Police Commissioner Andrew Coster, suggesting that his office was intentionally kept in the dark regarding the allegations.

This situation has sparked significant public interest and scrutiny, particularly regarding the handling of serious allegations within the police force. The responses from Mitchell’s office have raised concerns about the accountability of public officials and the procedures in place for addressing such allegations.

As the investigation unfolds, the implications of these revelations could have a lasting impact on the political landscape and public trust in law enforcement agencies. The scrutiny on Mitchell and his staff is set to continue as more details emerge regarding the handling of these sensitive issues.

The ongoing situation underscores the importance of transparency and communication in government, particularly when it concerns allegations of misconduct that can affect the integrity of public institutions.
