Otago Dominates Counties-Manukau with 33-19 Victory
Otago Rugby secured a confident 33-19 victory over Counties-Manukau at Forsyth Barr Stadium on March 15, 2024. This win solidified Otago’s position in fourth place, showcasing their growing consistency in the National Provincial Championship. Despite an early setback, Otago demonstrated control throughout the match, scoring five tries to Counties-Manukau’s three.
The game started with a moment of uncertainty for Otago when Jona Nareki had his touch-finder charged down, allowing Counties to take a brief lead. However, Otago quickly regained their footing. They opened the scoring with a determined try from Sam Gilbert, who showcased impressive strength to break through for five points.
Counties-Manukau responded by taking the lead through winger Simon-Peter Toleafoa, who capitalized on Nareki’s charged kick. The crowd of 3,100 fell silent momentarily but was soon brought back to life as Otago’s attacking prowess shone through.
Otago’s attacking strategy paid off as they spread the ball wide, allowing Nareki to score in the corner after a well-timed pass from Dylan Pledger. They built on this momentum with a clinical lineout that led to a try from Will Tucker, pushing the score to 19-7.
Counties-Manukau faced challenges when they lost experienced loose forward Dalton Papali’i to a head injury assessment, followed by first five Jackson Rainsford and halfback Jonathan Taumateine, both of whom hobbled off the pitch. Despite this, Counties ended the first half strongly, with prop Keran van Staden scoring just before the halftime whistle, reducing Otago’s lead to 19-12.
The second half saw Otago continuing to threaten, with Gilbert nearly scoring again. After a brief moment of indecision, Gilbert opted to play it safe, allowing Counties to regroup. Otago eventually extended their lead when Pledger scored under the posts after a powerful run from Christian Lio-Willie.
Despite a late consolation try from Counties’ Gibson Popoali’i, the match concluded with Otago firmly in control. Coach Mark Brown acknowledged the missed opportunities but expressed satisfaction with the overall performance. “Yes, we did miss some chances. The scoreboard could have looked a lot better. But we’re happy enough,” he stated.
The victory comes after Otago’s earlier upset win against Wellington, which has sparked renewed interest in their campaign. As Brown noted, “Traditionally, we haven’t done well after a good performance, so we wanted to back up and we’ve done that.”
In other matches from the same weekend, Lima Sopoaga secured a dramatic 23-22 victory for Waikato over Taranaki, demonstrating his skill with a last-minute penalty goal. Meanwhile, Tasman triumphed over North Harbour with a score of 43-19, and Northland defeated Auckland 43-24.
Otago’s next challenge will be to maintain this momentum as they aim for continued success in the competition. Their performance against Counties-Manukau has not only boosted their confidence but also reignited discussions among fans and analysts alike about their potential this season.
