Deepika Padukone Exits Kalki 2898 AD Sequel Amid Production Changes
In a significant shift for one of Indian cinema’s most anticipated franchises, actor Deepika Padukone will not reprise her role in the sequel to Kalki 2898 AD. The production firm, Vyjayanthi Movies, announced this decision via an official statement on the social media platform X, emphasizing their inability to establish a partnership with Padukone despite a lengthy collaboration during the first film’s production.
The statement read: “This is to officially announce that @deepikapadukone will not be a part of the upcoming sequel of #Kalki2898AD. After careful consideration, we have decided to part ways. Despite the long journey of making the first film, we were unable to find a partnership. And a film like @Kalki2898AD deserves that commitment and much more. We wish her the best with her future works.”
Impact on the Sequel’s Narrative
Padukone’s role as SUM-80, also known as Sumathi, was pivotal in the original film. As the prophesied mother of Kalki, her absence in the sequel represents a crucial alteration to the storyline. Director Nag Ashwin has indicated that filming for the sequel is expected to commence towards the end of 2023.
The first installment of Kalki 2898 AD received acclaim for its ambitious narrative and visual effects, featuring prominent actors such as Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, and Disha Patani. Set in a dystopian future, the film draws inspiration from the epic Mahabharata and showcases a blend of mythology and science fiction.
Earlier this year, Padukone also withdrew from another project, Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Spirit, amid reported disputes over work schedules, remuneration, and profit-sharing arrangements. These developments raise questions about her future projects and collaborations within the industry.
The exit of such a prominent figure from a major franchise will undoubtedly shape audience expectations and the film’s direction moving forward. As the production gears up for the sequel, the team at Vyjayanthi Movies remains focused on delivering a project that aligns with the high standards set by its predecessor.
Fans and industry observers alike will be keen to see how the sequel adapts to this change and what new directions the storyline may take.
