Selwyn-Christchurch Train Trial Launches to Gauge Commuter Demand
A proposed commuter rail service connecting Selwyn townships to Christchurch is set to undergo a trial later this year. The Tawera Malvern Community Board is spearheading the initiative, aiming to assess the demand for passenger transport along the existing Midland rail line. Townships such as Springfield, Kirwee, and Darfield would benefit from this service, which seeks to alleviate increasing traffic congestion due to a growing population.
Samantha Samuel, a member of the community board, emphasized that the proposal is still in its initial phases. “The trial is the result of community feedback calling for a commuter service in the face of increasing traffic from a growing population,” she stated. The existing infrastructure provides a solid foundation for this initiative, prompting discussions on the feasibility of a commuter train system in the future.
The plan outlines a phased approach, starting with a one-off express train service designed to gather data and insights. This information will be crucial in constructing a robust business case for a more permanent commuter train option. The trial process will delve into the costs associated with the service and address the vital question of funding sources.
Mainland Rail has already begun introducing event express trains, with a successful inaugural journey between Christchurch and Invercargill in January 2024. The ticket prices for this trip started at $149 for a one-way fare, climbing to $298 for a return. Samuel noted that Mainland Rail is considering Rolleston as a potential connection point for future events in Christchurch, with plans to extend services as far as Springfield.
During a recent community board meeting, Samuel discussed the idea of an express train service to the upcoming Six60 concert at the new One New Zealand Stadium in Christchurch on May 16, 2024. Unfortunately, the suggestion was deemed unfeasible. To make the concert’s 5:00 PM start time, the train would need to depart Springfield by 3:45 PM. The concert, which concludes around 11:00 PM, would not allow for a timely return, with the earliest possible arrival back in Springfield at around 2:00 AM.
Samuel clarified that, due to the concert’s sell-out status in early February, coordinating the event with the train service was not practical. Instead, she plans to focus on daytime events for the initial trial, stating, “I am trying to work towards having something in place by May, but it’s a work in progress.”
Community support for the proposal has been strong. Resident Simon Williams expressed his enthusiasm during the board meeting, highlighting the potential impact of the service. He noted the growing population in the area, especially in West Melton and Darfield, and emphasized the necessity for a rail link to Christchurch. “There’s a huge need, in my view, for trains into Christchurch from here,” he asserted. Williams believes that Springfield, with its historical railway depot and well-preserved station, represents an ideal starting and ending point for the proposed service.
As planning continues, the Tawera Malvern Community Board remains focused on gathering community input and data to support the development of a commuter rail service that could significantly improve transportation options for residents in the Selwyn region.
