Matt Damon and Ben Affleck have reunited on-screen for Netflix’s new crime thriller, The Rip, a gritty narrative that dives into the world of narcotics investigation. Their collaboration comes after Damon was inspired by Sir Peter Jackson’s documentary series on The Beatles, which reignited the duo’s creative partnership. While the film differs in tone from their earlier works such as Good Will Hunting and Dogma, it nevertheless showcases the strong chemistry between the two actors.

Plot Overview and Setting

The Rip unfolds within the Miami-Dade Police Department’s Tactical Narcotics Team (TNT). The story begins with the shocking murder of Captain Jackie Velez, played by Lina Esco. Following her death, the remaining officers are left grappling with their grief and anger, particularly as they become the focus of an FBI investigation.

Detective Sergeant J.D. Byrne, portrayed by Affleck, finds himself in a tense confrontation with his brother, Del (Scott Adkins), who is conducting the investigation into Velez’s death. Their sibling rivalry adds a layer of complexity to the narrative, especially as Byrne is questioned about his connection to the captain and why he was overlooked for her position.

Meanwhile, Lieutenant Dane Dumars, played by Damon, is determined to prove their team is free from the corruption that plagued their predecessors in the Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT). As tensions rise, Dumars advocates for a covert investigation into Velez’s murder. Just as he is about to unwind with his colleagues, he receives intel about a significant stash of drug money located in a house in Hialeah.

High Stakes and Unfolding Tensions

With his team, including the dog money tracker Winston, Dumars embarks on a search of the property, which is inhabited by Desi Molina, played by Sasha Calle. Initially dismissing any knowledge of hidden cash, Desi’s demeanor raises suspicions among the officers. What begins as a routine investigation soon escalates when they discover evidence suggesting the stash could be as high as USD 20 million, far exceeding initial estimates.

As the plot thickens, Dumars emphasizes the importance of conducting a meticulous count of the money, especially when outside forces begin to question the integrity of their operation. DEA Agent Matty Nix, played by Kyle Chandler, confronts Byrne about the mounting pressures and personal struggles that could compromise their mission. “What do you have to lose when you lose everything?” Nix asks, highlighting the stakes involved.

The film is characterized by its intense narrative twists, challenging viewers to discern the true nature of its characters. While it incorporates elements reminiscent of director Joe Carnahan’s earlier works, such as Narc and Smokin’ Aces, it also grapples with moral dilemmas that resonate throughout the storyline.

Alongside Damon and Affleck, the cast includes notable performances from Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, and Catalina Sandino Moreno, each contributing to the multifaceted portrayal of law enforcement under pressure.

The Rip is currently available for streaming on Netflix, offering audiences a thrilling experience that intertwines personal conflicts with high-stakes drama. The film’s exploration of loyalty, betrayal, and the quest for justice adds depth to what could easily be a straightforward crime thriller.
