Al Duhail and Sharjah Battle to 1-1 Draw in ACL Showdown
Al Duhail SC and Sharjah FC played to a tense 1-1 draw on September 27, 2023, in an AFC Champions League (ACL) match at the Abdullah Bin Khalifa Stadium in Doha, Qatar. The result kept both teams’ hopes alive for advancing in the Elite Round of 16, with each side now holding eight points ahead of the final round of League Stage matches next week.
Both clubs entered the match needing a victory after Al Duhail suffered a 2-1 defeat against Iranian side Tractor SC in their previous outing, while Sharjah was narrowly beaten by Saudi Pro League champions Al Hilal SFC. The stakes were high as they aimed to secure their positions in the tournament.
Match Highlights and Key Moments
Early in the match, Al Duhail threatened the Sharjah defense with Jean-Charles Castelletto’s header from a Benjamin Bourigeaud cross, narrowly missing the target in the sixth minute. Sharjah responded quickly, with Matheus Saldanha forcing Al Duhail goalkeeper Salah Zakaria into a crucial save just three minutes later.
Al Duhail continued to apply pressure, nearly scoring again in the 12th minute when Edmílson Junior’s pass found an unmarked Boubakary Soumare, whose shot struck the left post. These missed chances would prove costly as Al Duhail later conceded a penalty in the 41st minute. Zakaria brought down Luanzinho inside the box, allowing Igor Coronado to convert from the penalty spot, giving Sharjah a 1-0 lead.
As the second half commenced, Al Duhail sought to equalize. Boulbina and Krzysztof Piatek were instrumental in creating opportunities, but Maro Katinic failed to capitalize on a chance set up by Coronado in the 50th minute. Luanzinho came close to extending Sharjah’s lead with a header that narrowly missed its mark in the 60th minute.
Late Drama and Equalizer
Frustration mounted for Al Duhail when Boulbina’s effort was ruled offside in the 62nd minute, denying them a potential equalizer. However, the Algerian midfielder found redemption in the 81st minute, scoring from the penalty spot after being fouled by Rafael Pereira. Although Sharjah’s goalkeeper initially saved the shot, the penalty was retaken due to an infraction, and Boulbina confidently converted his second attempt, leveling the score at 1-1.
The match concluded with both teams sharing the points, leaving their fates hanging in the balance as they prepare for the final League Stage matches. With eight points each, Al Duhail and Sharjah will look to secure their spots in the next round of this prestigious tournament.
